Chapter 5 - THE SHERIFF WHO GUARDED EMPTY PANTRIES.
Sheriff Collins called the matter a private property dispute and ordered Emma to surrender the folder.
Michael refused.
“You arrest hungry fathers for taking firewood while guarding the man who stole federal aid.”
Collins warned him not to become violent.
Emma stepped forward.
“He raised his voice. Mr. Hale stole our food. Which one scares you?”
The sheriff’s silence answered her.
Daniel admitted Collins had driven him to the lodge after Hale threatened to prosecute Sarah for benefit fraud. The fraud existed only because Hale had deposited relief money into accounts opened under tenant names.
Collins received campaign donations and free land from Hale Agricultural Holdings.
Then Sarah brought out a coffee tin containing every rent receipt she had saved for twelve years.
The receipts showed the family had paid enough to purchase the farmhouse twice.
Hale called rent ownership of nothing.
Sarah replied, “Only poor people are told decades of payment leave them with empty hands.”
One receipt carried a handwritten code matching Rusty’s collar tag.
