Chapter 9 - THE BROTHER WHO STOLE TO KEEP THEM HOUSED.
Daniel admitted taking the trust payments.
At first, he used them to pay Sarah’s medical bills and prevent the bank from seizing the farm. Later, Hale discovered the account and forced Daniel to continue withdrawing money as proof the family had income.
That false income caused their food-aid rejection.
Michael stared at his brother.
“You helped us secretly, then helped Hale punish us for receiving the help.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I kept choosing the emergency in front of me.”
Emma answered, “And every choice created another emergency for us.”
The tenant council traced the stolen funds, suspended Daniel from handling evidence and placed all family benefits under review.
Hale, Collins and county officials were charged with aid fraud, extortion and deed forgery. No one allowed Hale to trade other names for immunity.
Then the pipeline survey revealed something beneath the barn.
A buried metal box contained original land deeds from forty neighboring farms.
On top lay Rusty’s old puppy photograph.
