Chapter 8 - THE GRANDFATHER WHO WATCHED THEM STARVE.
Samuel Reed appeared by video from a retirement community in Indiana.
He admitted faking his death after discovering Hale had bribed county officials to seize family farms. Samuel believed disappearing would protect the trust until Emma was old enough to inherit.
Emma looked around the freezing kitchen.
“You protected the deed. You did not protect the people living on it.”
Samuel had continued monitoring the farm through the church fund, but Hale controlled distribution. Samuel knew food deliveries were delayed and still refused to reveal himself because he feared exposing the trust.
Michael’s anger turned cold.
“My children were hungry while you protected paperwork.”
Samuel surrendered control of the trust to the tenant council and agreed to testify without immunity for concealing assets and abandoning his family.
The pipeline company froze every purchase connected to Hale.
Then investigators found that Michael had received monthly payments from Samuel’s trust for years.
Michael said he had never seen them.
