Chapter 6 - THE LOCKER BENEATH THE HUNTING LODGE.

State investigators reached the lodge before Hale’s staff could clear it.

Rusty was found alive, warm and unharmed in a secured kennel. Emma held him for several minutes without speaking, while Michael stood at a distance, ashamed that relief and heartbreak could exist together.

Inside the locker were forged aid applications, tenant deeds and recordings of Hale threatening families with eviction during winter.

One recording captured Michael begging for flour and firewood.

Hale replied, “Hunger makes signatures honest.”

Emma looked at her father.

“He wanted us desperate.”

Michael nodded.

“And I let desperation make me lie to you.”

Rusty’s collar contained a tiny memory card placed there by Daniel. It recorded Hale discussing a plan to buy every snowbound farm before a natural-gas company announced a pipeline project.

The land beneath Emma’s farmhouse was worth millions.

Then investigators opened Hale’s purchase list.

Sarah’s name appeared beside the words: COOPERATING TENANT.

Michael turned toward his wife.

“What did you promise him?”
