Chapter 7 - THE DEAL SARAH MADE IN SECRET.
Sarah admitted meeting Hale after her youngest child went a full day without food.
Hale offered groceries, heating fuel and protection from eviction if she convinced Michael to sell quietly.
“I took the food,” she said. “I never signed the deed.”
Michael stared at the steaming pot.
“The meat came from him.”
Sarah nodded.
She had recognized Rusty’s collar in Hale’s lodge and believed the dog was gone. Hale encouraged that belief because grief made the family easier to divide.
Emma’s voice trembled.
“You both decided I could not handle the truth.”
Sarah did not ask forgiveness.
“We treated you like a child when Hale was already using your name like an adult’s signature.”
The tenant families formed an independent council and refused to let Michael or Sarah speak for everyone without election.
Daniel surrendered his security records and accepted charges for the forged witnessing he had done.
Then the council reviewed Sarah’s grocery deliveries.
