Chapter 14 - JULIAN WAS IN THE ROOM BEFORE CLAIRE DIED

Ethan stared at the photograph.
Julian Carrington.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
Black leather case.
Standing inside Claire’s hospital room.
5:52 a.m.
Claire’s reported death:
6:12.
Twenty minutes.
That was the first crack.
Adrian looked sick.
“I never saw him enter.”
Helen said,
“There was a service corridor.”
Arthur opened the floor plan.
Private access behind maternity rooms.
Usually used by staff.
One door opened directly into Claire’s room.
Ethan looked at Margaret.
“Who gave him access?”
No answer.
Helen checked the service log.
One override.
Approved by:
Dr. Pierce.
The room changed.
Ethan called him immediately.
Dr. Pierce answered.
The moment Ethan said Julian Carrington’s name, the doctor went silent.
Too silent.
Ethan heard it.
“You knew he was there.”
Dr. Pierce said,
“I was told he represented the family.”
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“My wife was the patient.”
Silence.
“I was her husband.”
Silence.
“Who gave him more authority than me?”
No answer.
That was the second crack.
Helen asked,
“Did Julian bring a medical case?”
Dr. Pierce hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Too late.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“What was inside?”
Dr. Pierce said,
“I don’t know.”
Helen looked unconvinced.
“Then why did you approve private access?”
The doctor’s voice weakened.
“Because Graham Wells told me the family had already authorized everything.”
Arthur went still.
Graham.
The compliance attorney.
The man caught on Claire’s recorder.
The man who drafted the hospital packet.
The one who asked what happened if Ethan came home early.
Everything connected.
That was the third crack.
Ethan looked at the sealed recorder.
Then at Adrian.
“Claire said ask why you arrived before Margaret.”
Adrian nodded.
“And because I wasn’t the first Carrington there.”
Ethan looked at Julian’s image.
“But why did she want me to ask you?”
Adrian’s face changed.
He knew something else.
Ethan saw it.
“What?”
Adrian whispered,
“Because Claire saw me talking to Julian.”
Silence.
“Before she was admitted?”
Adrian nodded.
“In the parking garage.”
The room froze.
That was the fourth crack.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What did Julian say?”
Adrian’s voice broke.
“He told me not to let Claire leave.”
“And?”
“He said if she called you, Margaret would lose everything.”
Ethan stared at him.
“What did you say?”
Adrian began crying.
“I said I didn’t want anyone hurt.”
The room went still.
Margaret looked at him.
Wrong move.
Emily—no, Claire's not there. Ethan saw.
“Anyone?”
He repeated.
“Why would you say anyone hurt?”
Adrian looked terrified now.
Because the truth was not in what Julian said.
It was in what Adrian feared might happen.
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“What did Julian tell you before Claire entered the hospital?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then whispered,
“He said the pregnancy would be over by morning.”
The room died.
Helen covered her mouth.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Margaret said quickly,
“He meant the legal problem.”
Too fast.
Too specific.
Wrong move.
Ethan turned toward her.
“No one asked what he meant.”
Silence.
Then Adrian looked at the black leather case in the photograph.
“He had that case in the garage too.”
Arthur asked,
“What was inside?”
Adrian shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
But Helen did.
Her face changed.
Everyone saw it.
Ethan looked at her.
“What?”
Helen stared at the case.
Then said,
“I saw one exactly like that in the hospital pharmacy archive.”
The room froze.
It was not luggage.
May you like
It was a secure medical transport case.
And someone had brought it into Claire’s room twenty minutes before her death.
