Chapter 25 - THE DOCTOR WROTE THAT CLAIRE WAS STILL AWAKE

Dr. Pierce stopped denying things.
Finally.
The moment Arthur showed him the bracelet, his face collapsed.
“Where did you get that?”
Ethan looked at him.
“Her room.”
Silence.
That was the first crack.
The doctor sat down.
No one comforted him.
Good.
Ethan asked,
“Was Claire alive at 8:29?”
Dr. Pierce closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
One word.
Enough.
The room went dead.
Ethan stared at him.
“The hospital declared her dead at 6:12.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
That was the second crack.
Ethan’s voice remained controlled.
“Who changed the time?”
Dr. Pierce looked at Margaret.
Then at Julian.
Investigators had located Julian at a private residence two hours earlier.
He was now under questioning.
The doctor answered,
“Graham prepared the first certificate.”
“And you?”
Dr. Pierce began crying.
“I signed the final medical confirmation.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
“Why?”
No answer.
“Why?”
The doctor looked at the floor.
“Because Margaret said the family would handle everything privately.”
There it was.
Family.
Privacy.
Reputation.
The respectable vocabulary of cowardice.
That was the third crack.
Dr. Pierce continued.
Claire had been moved to the Carrington estate under the claim that she required private recovery.
But no independent physician was called.
No public hospital notified.
No emergency transport requested.
Why?
Because the paperwork concerning Lily and the trust had not yet been secured.
Ethan’s face emptied.
“My wife waited while you protected documents.”
Dr. Pierce said nothing.
Silence became confession.
Then the doctor revealed something else.
Claire remained conscious past 9:00 a.m.
She asked for Ethan.
She asked for Lily.
She asked for Helen Ross.
Margaret refused all three.
At 9:18, Claire tried to leave the room herself.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Of course she did.
She had been trying to leave from the beginning.
Then Dr. Pierce said,
“There was a camera.”
Arthur looked up.
“What?”
“The nursery monitor.”
The room froze.
A nursery monitor camera had been installed before Lily’s birth.
It recorded locally.
Not through the mansion system.
Independent memory card.
Ethan stared at him.
“Where is it?”
Dr. Pierce shook his head.
“I never had it.”
“Who did?”
The doctor looked toward Margaret.
No answer needed.
That was the fourth crack.
Investigators searched Margaret’s private safe.
One memory card.
Label:
C.E.
Claire Ethan?
Carrington Estate?
No one knew.
Arthur opened it.
Footage.
8:41 a.m.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
Alive.
Holding the hospital bracelet.
Margaret stood by the door.
Julian near the window.
Dr. Pierce beside the medical case.
Claire looked directly toward the camera.
She knew it was there.
Then she said:
“If Ethan ever sees this, ask them why I was declared dead before they brought me here.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
The video continued.
Margaret said,
“This is not helping you.”
Claire answered,
“No.”
Her voice stayed clear.
“It is helping him.”
Then Claire looked directly into the lens again.
And said:
“Ethan, the casket is part of the lie.”
The room froze.
Arthur paused the footage.
Ethan stared at the screen.
The casket.
The funeral.
The woman he had knelt beside.
May you like
Claire had known about it before her actual death.
Which meant someone had planned the funeral while she was still alive.
