Chapter 26 - THE CASKET WAS ORDERED WHILE CLAIRE WAS STILL ALIVE

The funeral home order was placed at 7:06 a.m.

Claire was alive at 8:29.

The casket came first.

That was the first crack.

Ethan stared at the purchase record.

White casket.

Lily arrangement.

Private preparation.

Restricted viewing.

Ordered by:

Margaret Carrington.

He looked at her through the investigation-room glass.

No words.

Not yet.

Arthur opened the invoice.

The funeral director had been told Claire died at 6:12.

No independent verification required.

Family physician certification to follow.

Dr. Pierce signed it later.

The story had been prepared first.

Evidence was forced to follow.

Again.

That was the second crack.

Ethan opened the nursery footage.

Claire was still speaking.

“The casket is part of the lie.”

A pause.

“Margaret said Ethan will come home too late.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“She said grief will make him easier to control.”

Silence.

That sentence changed everything.

The funeral was not only a cover-up.

It was meant to break Ethan.

A grieving husband.

A dead wife.

A lost child.

A trust requiring family control.

A perfect emotional collapse.

Then Margaret could call him compromised too.

That was the third crack.

Claire looked toward Julian.

“You wrote the papers.”

He said nothing.

“You prepared the nursery.”

Silence.

“You took Lily.”

Julian finally answered.

“The child belongs to the family.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Claire replied immediately.

“She belongs to herself.”

The room went still.

Even then.

Claire understood what none of them did.

Lily was not an heir.

Not a trust trigger.

Not a Carrington asset.

A child.

The footage continued.

Then Margaret said something no one expected.

“Ethan cannot know Lily survived.”

Claire looked at her.

“Why?”

A pause.

Margaret answered,

“Because if he knows, the trust moves immediately.”

There it was.

The final financial motive.

That was the fourth crack.

Arthur opened the trust amendment again.

The wording had been misrepresented.

Control did not pass merely when Lily was born.

It passed when Ethan received legally verified notice of a living descendant.

Margaret had not only needed Lily alive.

She needed Ethan ignorant.

As long as Ethan believed both Claire and the baby were dead, Margaret retained temporary authority.

Ethan stared at the document.

“For seven years.”

Arthur nodded.

“She kept control because you were never formally notified.”

Silence.

Then the footage showed Claire looking directly at the camera.

“Then I’ll tell him myself.”

Margaret answered,

“You won’t get the chance.”

The room froze.

No one spoke.

The footage continued.

But before anyone could hear more, the image cut to black.

Not naturally.

Deleted.

Arthur examined the file.

Three minutes missing.

Then footage resumed at 9:37 a.m.

The room was empty.

Claire gone.

Margaret gone.

Julian gone.

Only one object remained on the bed.

Claire’s wedding ring.

And beside it, a note.

I am still here.

Ethan stared at the words.

Then Arthur found the next transport log.

At 9:41 a.m., another vehicle left the estate.

Destination:

Unknown.

Passenger:

Claire.

May you like

She had been moved again.

Alive.
