Chapter 17 - ETHAN HAD A DAUGHTER

Ethan could not speak.
Female.
Claire Carrington.
Ethan Carrington.
6:07 a.m.
His daughter.
That was the first crack.
He looked at Margaret.
“You told me there was no child.”
She said nothing.
“You watched me kneel beside Claire’s casket.”
Silence.
“You watched me believe I lost both of them.”
Still nothing.
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Where is my daughter?”
Margaret looked away.
Wrong move.
That was enough.
Ethan stepped forward.
Not threatening.
Not loud.
Just devastated.
“Where?”
Margaret whispered,
“I don’t know.”
He almost laughed.
Not with humor.
“No.”
“You always know where the paperwork goes.”
Silence.
Arthur pulled the neonatal record.
Birth weight.
Time.
Temporary ID.
One nurse initials field.
Blank.
Helen stared.
“This band was printed.”
“But no official nurse claimed the delivery.”
Ethan looked at her.
“How is that possible?”
“It means someone used the system without entering the full chart.”
The same pattern.
Create what is useful.
Delete what is dangerous.
That was the second crack.
Adrian began crying.
“I heard a baby.”
Everyone turned.
Ethan stopped breathing.
“What?”
Adrian looked terrified.
“At the hospital.”
“When?”
“Before Julian left.”
The room froze.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Adrian’s face collapsed.
“Because Mother said I imagined it.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Too late.
Ethan stared at her.
“You told him the baby wasn’t real.”
Silence.
The same family tactic.
Again.
Call truth confusion.
Call memory instability.
Call fear emotional.
Anything but answer the evidence.
That was the third crack.
Arthur pulled the SUV route.
The black vehicle went from hospital to Carrington estate.
Arrival:
7:19 a.m.
Security gate opened using Julian’s code.
One hour later, a second car arrived.
Registered to Margaret.
Ethan looked at her.
“You went there.”
No answer.
Adrian whispered,
“She came back at noon.”
Everyone turned.
Margaret went white.
That was the fourth crack.
Ethan stared at his brother.
“She came back where?”
“To the mansion.”
“Was she alone?”
Adrian looked at Margaret.
Then said,
“Yes.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“What about Julian?”
“No.”
“Graham?”
“No.”
“The baby?”
Adrian began crying.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan turned toward Arthur.
“Open the estate cameras.”
The old Carrington estate still had active security.
Most footage deleted.
But the gate system kept low-resolution entry images.
7:19 a.m.
Julian’s SUV.
7:21.
Bassinet visible through rear window.
Ethan stopped breathing.
8:03.
Margaret’s car.
11:12.
Margaret’s car leaving.
12:47.
Julian’s SUV leaving through rear gate.
Different driver.
A woman.
Not Julian.
Helen froze.
“I know her.”
Everyone turned.
The driver was Diane Mercer.
The woman who had preserved the hospital envelope.
The woman who claimed Margaret ordered it destroyed.
The woman who had helped reveal the truth.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Diane had been part of the route after all.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice.
Diane.
“I know what you just found.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
She continued.
“And before you accuse me, listen carefully.”
A pause.
“I took your daughter away from Julian.”
The room froze.
Ethan could barely speak.
“Where is she?”
Diane began crying.
May you like
Then answered,
“I don’t know anymore.”
