Chapter 16 - THE BABY WAS MARKED UNAVAILABLE, NOT DEAD

Ethan read the line again.

No infant available for transfer.

He looked at Helen.

“What does that mean?”

She shook her head.

“It isn’t standard language.”

Margaret said quickly,

“It means there was no baby.”

Too fast.

Too certain.

That was the first crack.

Ethan turned toward her.

“How do you know?”

Silence.

The room changed.

Arthur opened Claire’s hospital record.

Pregnancy confirmed.

Fetal heartbeat documented.

Prenatal monitoring recorded.

But the final maternity chart was incomplete.

Three pages missing.

Delivery status.

Infant status.

Maternal final note.

All gone.

Helen went pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You keep saying that.”

Her eyes filled.

“Because someone did not just alter a line.”

“They removed the end of her medical story.”

That was the second crack.

Arthur checked the access log.

Three deleted pages.

Removed at 6:19 a.m.

Using administrative override.

Credential owner:

Graham Wells.

But Graham was not hospital staff.

He should never have had access.

Ethan stared at Margaret.

“Who gave him the password?”

No answer.

Then Adrian spoke.

“I saw Graham with Julian.”

Everyone turned.

“When?” Ethan asked.

“After Claire died.”

The room froze.

“Where?”

“In the loading corridor.”

Arthur looked at the hospital map.

The loading corridor connected maternity to private transport.

The same place a newborn transfer would leave unseen.

That was the third crack.

Ethan stepped closer to Adrian.

“What were they carrying?”

Adrian’s face collapsed.

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“A covered hospital bassinet.”

The room died.

Helen covered her mouth.

Margaret said,

“No.”

Too quickly.

Adrian looked at her.

“You saw it too.”

Silence.

That was the fourth crack.

Ethan stared at his mother.

“You saw them moving a bassinet.”

Margaret lifted her chin.

“It was empty.”

“How do you know?”

No answer.

That was enough.

Arthur searched transport-camera backups.

One still survived.

6:24 a.m.

Julian.

Graham.

A covered hospital bassinet.

Margaret six feet behind them.

Adrian near the elevator.

No Ethan.

No Helen.

No official maternity nurse.

The bassinet moved toward the private loading exit.

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Where did it go?”

Arthur traced the loading gate.

One vehicle exited at 6:31.

Black SUV.

Registered to Carrington Estate Holdings.

Destination unknown.

But the vehicle’s GPS had not been fully erased.

One coordinate remained.

The old Carrington estate.

The nursery.

The controlled room.

The place prepared before Claire was admitted.

Ethan looked at Margaret.

“My child was taken there.”

She said nothing.

That silence was unbearable.

Then Helen saw the timestamp on another record.

A neonatal wristband had been printed at 6:07 a.m.

Five minutes before Claire’s reported death.

Infant:

Female.

Mother:

Claire Carrington.

Father:

Ethan Carrington.

The room froze.

Ethan stared at the screen.

His daughter had been born.

May you like

Alive long enough to receive an identity band.

And someone had removed her from the hospital before he even knew she existed.
