Chapter 18 - DIANE TOOK THE BABY FROM THE ESTATE

Ethan put the call on speaker.

“Start from the beginning.”

Diane took one breath.

“I was at the estate that morning.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

That was the first crack.

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew.”

No answer.

Diane continued.

“Julian called me.”

“Why?”

“Because I handled private hospital transfers.”

Helen stared at the phone.

“You moved patients off-record?”

Diane answered honestly.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No clean language.

Just truth.

That mattered.

She continued.

“Julian said a newborn needed private protection.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Protection from whom?”

Silence.

“Diane.”

“From you.”

The room froze.

That was the second crack.

Ethan almost laughed.

“My daughter was taken from me to protect her from me?”

Diane continued.

“That’s what I was told.”

“By whom?”

“Margaret.”

Every eye turned.

Margaret said nothing.

The room changed.

Diane explained.

Margaret claimed Ethan was emotionally unstable.

That Claire was medically compromised.

That the family needed twenty-four hours before informing him.

Ethan looked at the old hospital forms.

Same script.

Same trap.

He was not only kept away.

He had been rewritten too.

That was the third crack.

Diane continued.

“When I reached the estate, Julian had the baby.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

The answer broke him.

“She was alive.”

A pause.

“She had dark hair.”

Claire’s hair.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Diane continued.

“She was crying.”

“I asked where Claire was.”

“Julian said she was gone.”

Silence.

“I asked whether Ethan knew.”

“He said Ethan would know when the paperwork was complete.”

Ethan stared at Margaret.

Paperwork first.

Father second.

Always.

Diane continued.

“Then I saw the nursery.”

“The locks.”

“The medical room.”

“The camera blackout.”

“And I understood.”

Ethan looked at the phone.

“What?”

“They were not protecting the baby.”

“They were controlling her.”

That was the fourth crack.

Diane took the child.

She used the transfer authority Julian had given her.

Drove out through the rear gate.

But she did not go to the address Julian provided.

She went elsewhere.

A church-run private shelter outside the city.

She left the baby under temporary anonymous protection.

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Then where is she now?”

Diane began crying.

“Someone took her two days later.”

The room froze.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Diane.”

“I swear.”

Her voice broke.

“The shelter records were altered.”

“The baby’s intake name disappeared.”

“The security camera failed.”

“And the staff received a legal order saying the family had reclaimed custody.”

Ethan looked at Margaret.

She said nothing.

That was enough.

Arthur asked,

“Who signed the legal order?”

Diane hesitated.

Then answered.

“Graham Wells.”

The room changed.

The compliance attorney again.

The man behind Claire’s hospital packet.

The man with administrative access.

The man who knew Ethan would not return early.

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“Where is Graham now?”

Arthur checked.

Phone off.

Office empty.

House vacant.

Gone.

Then Diane said one final thing.

“There was a photograph attached to the custody order.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Of whom?”

Diane answered,

“Of the person authorized to take the baby.”

Silence.

“Who?”

Diane whispered,

“Adrian.”

The room froze.

Adrian went white.

And for the first time, Ethan did not know whether his brother was another victim of forged identity—

Or the last person who had seen his daughter.
