Adrian recovered quickly because men like him had been trained to treat every disaster as a public-relations problem.
He laughed and told the guests that Evelyn had created a fraudulent video after the foundation’s board discovered she had stolen millions of dollars.
The ballroom filled with uneasy murmurs.
Several donors immediately looked at Evelyn as if the accusation had already become a conviction.
A television executive near the front whispered that a woman from Evelyn’s background should never have been trusted with private accounts.
His wife nodded without asking what evidence existed.
Evelyn had spent fifteen years proving that she belonged in rooms like this.
Adrian needed only fifteen seconds to remind everyone that they still considered her an invited outsider.
He told the guests that the scratches on her face came from attacking a security guard at his private residence.
No guard stepped forward.
No police report was shown.
Yet the allegation traveled across the ballroom faster than the truth.
Adrian’s attorneys moved toward the wall display and demanded that the livestream be shut down.
The attendant refused.
Adrian stared at the man in the black suit and reminded him who paid his salary.
The attendant answered quietly, “Not anymore.”
Evelyn then revealed that the gala display had been connected to several independent servers.
Even if the ballroom screen went dark, more than three hundred thousand people were already watching online.
The number climbed with every second.
Adrian lowered his voice and warned Evelyn that the broadcast would destroy them both.
She replied that only one of them had built a life from stolen money.
The screen returned.
This time, it showed foundation records proving that Adrian had transferred funds from a housing program for low-income families into private companies controlled by his relatives.
The guests stopped whispering.
Many of them had donated to that program for tax benefits and favorable press.
Adrian claimed Evelyn had authorized every transaction.
Then he produced documents carrying her signature.
The evidence looked genuine.
For the first time that night, Evelyn’s confidence faltered.
She examined the enlarged signatures and realized Adrian had not merely framed her after their separation.
He had been preparing to blame her for years.
Then a new message appeared on her phone.
It came from her own attorney.
