Chapter 8 - Seven Minutes to Buy His Freedom

Adrian had seven minutes to decide whether to protect himself or destroy his father.
Victor ordered him to remain silent.
He promised that the family’s attorneys could defeat every charge and restore their reputation once public attention moved elsewhere.
Adrian looked around the ballroom for support.
The same guests who had laughed when Evelyn entered now avoided his eyes.
Wealthy loyalty lasted only while association remained profitable.
Evelyn told Adrian she did not need the companies.
She had released the evidence to expose the workers who had been cheated, not to inherit the empire that cheated them.
Victor mocked her for pretending money did not matter.
Evelyn replied that money mattered most to people who had never had enough, which was why stealing pensions from housekeepers and maintenance workers was more violent than any insult delivered in a ballroom.
Marcus informed Adrian that federal agents had warrants for conspiracy, bribery and obstruction.
A confession might reduce his sentence.
Victor warned that cooperating would mean losing the Vale name forever.
Adrian finally understood that the name had never protected him out of love.
It protected Victor’s assets.
At eleven fifty-eight, Adrian faced the livestream.
He admitted that he had forged Evelyn’s signatures, ordered employees to monitor her phone and paid Thomas to create evidence of fraud.
He also admitted that he had known Victor was stealing from the employee pension fund.
The ballroom erupted.
Victor shouted that his son was lying.
Adrian continued.
He confessed that the scratches on Evelyn’s body came from security personnel who forced her out of the company archive after she discovered the original records.
He had watched the surveillance footage and ordered it deleted.
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger, but she did not look away.
At eleven fifty-nine, Adrian said the words that completed the trust condition.
“I committed fraud.”
The clock struck midnight.
Victor’s corporate control transferred to Evelyn.
Federal agents entered through the ballroom doors.
For the first time in his life, Victor Vale stood in a room where his money could not command the ending.

Then Evelyn’s new legal adviser approached with urgent news.
The trust had transferred the companies—but also transferred nine billion dollars in hidden debt and criminal liability directly into her name.
