Chapter 7 - The Daughter They Kept Outside
Caroline Vale had disappeared from public life twelve years earlier.
The family claimed she had died from complications after a private illness.
In reality, Victor had forced her into a European psychiatric facility after she accused him of stealing from the family foundation.
Caroline escaped with help from Rosa, who had been cleaning Victor’s hotel suite when she discovered documents proving the confinement.
That was why Victor feared Rosa.
She did not merely know about stolen money.
She knew how the family removed women who refused to remain silent.
Caroline opened the folder on the livestream.
Inside was a birth certificate showing that Victor Vale was Evelyn’s biological father.
Rosa had worked in one of his hotels when she was twenty-two.
Victor had pursued her, promised to leave his wife and abandoned her when she became pregnant.
He then offered money in exchange for silence.
Rosa refused.
Victor ensured that she remained trapped in low-wage employment for decades, blacklisting her whenever she applied for management positions.
The revelation did not make Evelyn feel privileged.
It made every humiliation more vicious.
Victor had watched his daughter clean banquet rooms, struggle through school and defend his exploited employees.
He had known who she was.
He had simply decided that a daughter born to a housekeeper did not deserve acknowledgment.
Adrian looked at Evelyn in horror.
They were half-siblings.
Victor admitted that he had encouraged Adrian’s romantic interest in her because he believed the relationship would eventually allow the family to control her shares in the foundation.
The disgust that moved through the ballroom finally turned against the Vale family.
Several guests demanded that Victor step down.
Others quietly deleted photographs showing their friendships with him.
Evelyn told them not to pretend they had suddenly developed principles.
They had tolerated his cruelty while his donations benefited them.
Victor raised the remote again.
Caroline warned that pressing it would release another file.
Victor pressed the button anyway.
Instead of destroying the archive, it transferred full ownership of several Vale companies into a trust bearing Evelyn’s name.
Victor stared at the screen in disbelief.
Caroline smiled.
“You taught us to read contracts, Father.”
Then the trust documents revealed one final condition.
