Chapter 4 - The Lawyer Who Sold Her Name

For seven years, Thomas Bell had introduced himself as Evelyn’s protector.
He had reviewed her contracts, defended her against hostile board members and advised her to remain patient whenever Adrian excluded her from financial meetings.
Thomas often reminded Evelyn that aggressive women were treated harshly in corporate America, especially women without family wealth.
He presented his caution as wisdom.
Now the ballroom watched him accept payment for helping Adrian manufacture the documents that made Evelyn appear responsible for the missing charity funds.
Thomas stood near the rear cocktail tables, his face drained of color.
He tried to leave, but Marcus and two other attendants blocked the doors.
Adrian accused Evelyn of unlawfully detaining the guests.
A retired judge agreed and warned her that she could face serious charges.
Evelyn asked whether the judge had shown equal concern when thousands of tenants were illegally evicted from Adrian’s properties.
The judge said the two matters were unrelated.
The answer revealed exactly why men like Adrian survived.
Crimes against poor families were treated as complicated business disputes.
Closing a ballroom door on wealthy donors became an emergency.
Thomas finally stepped forward and claimed the video had been edited.
Evelyn displayed the original file information, the security authentication and a chain of custody verified by an independent forensic company.
Thomas then changed his story.
He said Adrian had threatened his family.
Evelyn asked how much fear had been deposited into his offshore account.
The screen displayed transfers totaling four million dollars.
Guests began recording with their own phones.
Thomas begged Evelyn to stop.
He said they had once been friends.
She answered that friendship without loyalty was only access.
Adrian attempted to move toward the doors.
Marcus reminded him that federal investigators were already outside.
Adrian smiled again, although his hands had begun to shake.
He announced that Evelyn’s evidence would never survive in court because she had obtained it illegally.
Then every light in the ballroom went dark.
The livestream continued through the emergency system.
In the darkness, someone grabbed Evelyn’s injured wrist and whispered, “Your mother was never the target.”
When the lights returned, Thomas was lying unconscious beside the stage.
Evelyn’s phone was gone.

Adrian was still standing in front of her.
And Marcus was holding the missing phone.
