Chapter 6 - The Man Above the Ballroom
Victor Vale had built his reputation by presenting cruelty as discipline.
Business magazines celebrated him for transforming neglected neighborhoods into profitable luxury districts.
They rarely interviewed the families displaced by his projects.
They never interviewed the hotel workers whose retirement funds disappeared after his companies declared bankruptcy.
To the gala guests, Victor was an American success story.
To Evelyn’s mother, he was the man who had once told a room of housekeepers that poverty proved a lack of ambition.
Victor looked down at Evelyn from the balcony and called her ungrateful.
He reminded the guests that his family had funded her scholarship, introduced her to investors and allowed her to marry into a world she could never have entered alone.
Evelyn corrected him.
The scholarship had come from a charitable fund created with workers’ pension money.
The investors had trusted her results, not his surname.
And she had never married Adrian.
She had refused his proposal after learning that his family expected her to abandon her mother and change her last name.
Victor’s expression hardened.
He said women like Evelyn were dangerous because success made them forget their place.
The words silenced the ballroom more completely than any evidence.
For years, the Vale family had hidden class prejudice beneath language about culture, tradition and reputation.
Victor had now spoken the truth without realizing the livestream was still running.
The online audience passed one million viewers.
Rosa’s medical bracelet was another threat.
Victor claimed his men had removed her from the safe location.
Marcus contacted the protection team and received no response.
Evelyn’s exhaustion returned, but she refused to let Victor see fear.
She told him that if he harmed Rosa, every secret connected to the Vale family would be released automatically.
Victor lifted the remote.
He announced that the evidence archive would disappear with one button.
Adrian suddenly stepped between his father and the screen.
For the first time, he asked Victor to stop.
Victor looked at his son with disgust.
“You were supposed to control her,” he said.
Adrian lowered his head like a frightened child.
Then the balcony screen activated behind Victor.
It displayed a live video from Rosa’s safe house.
Rosa was unharmed.

Sitting beside her was Adrian’s supposedly deceased older sister, Caroline Vale, holding a folder labeled EVELYN CROSS—BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY.
