Chapter 5 - The Employee Everyone Suspected

Every guest turned toward Marcus.
Adrian immediately ordered security to arrest him.
The speed of the accusation exposed how naturally the room accepted guilt when it was attached to a Black employee in a service uniform.
Marcus held Evelyn’s phone openly and said he had taken it only to prevent someone else from destroying it.
A wealthy guest shouted that he had seen Marcus standing near the electrical controls.
Another claimed the attendant had been behaving suspiciously all evening.
Neither witness mentioned that dozens of executives had also moved through the ballroom during the blackout.
Evelyn asked Marcus to explain.
He revealed that the livestream had been attacked through the gala’s internal network.
Someone had attempted to replace Evelyn’s files with fabricated footage showing her accepting money from a foreign investor.
Marcus had disconnected the ballroom system and transferred the broadcast to his own secure device.
Adrian laughed at the idea that a door attendant could understand network security.
Marcus removed his jacket and showed an identification card from the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
Before joining the federal investigation, he had worked undercover inside Adrian’s hotel group for eight months.
The guests who had spoken to him like a servant now stared in silence.
Marcus said Adrian’s charity fraud was only one part of a larger operation involving pension theft, illegal surveillance and judicial bribery.
Thomas had agreed to testify that morning.
Someone inside the gala had attacked him before he could speak.
Adrian accused Marcus of planting every piece of evidence.
Evelyn asked why the federal government had not arrested Adrian earlier.
Marcus answered that investigators needed proof connecting Adrian personally to the financial transfers.
Evelyn’s livestream had finally provided it.
Then Thomas regained consciousness.
With bloodless lips and a trembling hand, he pointed past Adrian toward the VIP balcony.
“He didn’t order it,” Thomas whispered.
“His father did.”
Every face turned upward.
Victor Vale, the eighty-year-old patriarch of the family, stood beneath the gold balcony arch.

He had spent the evening pretending to be too ill to attend.
Now he held a remote control in one hand and Rosa Cross’s medical bracelet in the other.
