Chapter 4 - THE PAYMENTS MADE IN HIS NAME.
Ethan denied knowing about the monthly payments.
His private office had approved them as “widower wellness expenses,” hidden among insurance renewals. The authorization came from his chief financial officer, Daniel Reeves.
Maya did not let him escape into administrative language.
“Poor people lose electricity for missing one bill. Rich men finance a woman’s confinement for years and call it accounting.”
Ethan froze his accounts and requested an independent audit.
The center confirmed Claire Bennett was conscious and stable but could not leave without her guardian’s approval.
That guardian was Victoria.
Maya admitted she had visited Grace once. Security let her see the room only through glass. Grace pressed her palm to the window and mouthed one sentence: FIND THE SECOND BIRTH FILE.
The hospital archive contained two files for the twins. One named Grace as their mother. The other named Maya.
Ethan looked at her in shock.
“Are Leo and Ella yours?”
Maya shook her head.

“No. But your mother needed the record to make me look like the liar if I ever came forward.”
Then Ella opened the teddy bear’s stitched heart and a tiny hospital key fell out.
