Chapter 8 - THE WAITRESS WHO OWNED HALF THE HOSPITAL.
Maya stared at the shares she had never known existed.
Victoria had placed them in Maya’s name because a low-wage waitress with no legal support seemed easy to declare missing, incompetent or fraudulent later. Once that happened, the shares would return to the Cole family.
“You made me rich on paper so I could be powerless in court,” Maya said.
The hospital board tried to offer her immediate authority.
She refused.
“I will not become another private owner because your fraud accidentally chose me.”
Patients, nurses, custodians and separated families formed an interim council. Maya’s voting rights were placed under independent review, not transferred to Ethan or Grace.
Ethan disclosed that his fortune came partly from hospital billing practices he had never examined. He surrendered dividends tied to the program.
Victoria finally arrived with counsel and called the entire confrontation an attack on a respected medical institution.
Then Ella held up the teddy bear.
“Grandma gave this to us.”
Grace went pale.
