Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT MAYA LOCKED THE DOOR.
Maya admitted she had locked Grace’s hospital room on the night of the disappearance.
Grace was trying to leave with the twins while still weak from delivery. Maya feared she would collapse in the parking garage.
“I told myself I was keeping her safe.”
Grace’s transfer team arrived minutes later using the authorization Ethan had signed.
Maya begged them to wait, but the locked door made their claim of psychiatric danger look credible.
Ethan’s grief turned sharp. “You helped them take her.”
“Yes,” Maya said. “Not because I wanted her gone. Because I believed professionals would protect her better than a poor sister with no lawyer.”
The former nurse produced security footage showing Victoria congratulating Maya for “making the correct choice.”
Maya had struck the woman’s hand away and demanded Grace’s location. That part had been deleted from the official record.
Then police located Daniel’s abandoned car outside the rehabilitation center.
Inside was Grace’s original medical chart and a recent photograph.
