Chapter 5 - THE LOCKER BEHIND THE NICU.
The key opened an abandoned staff locker behind the hospital’s former neonatal unit.
Inside were medication logs, custody forms and recordings of uninsured mothers pressured to surrender rights for treatment.
Grace had discovered the program while reviewing the twins’ bills. The Cole Foundation collected federal reimbursement, private donations and family payments for the same care.
Victoria called the system charity.
A former nurse answered, “Charity does not begin by making frightened mothers sign away their voices.”
Maya found her own name on a confidentiality agreement. She had signed it after Victoria threatened to cancel surgery for Maya’s younger brother.
“I took the bargain,” Maya admitted. “Grace stayed trapped while I protected someone else.”
Ethan offered comfort. She stepped away.
“Fear explains my silence. It does not make it harmless.”
She surrendered the settlement for restitution and accepted review by the affected families.
Then the detective found Daniel Reeves’s signature on Grace’s false death certificate.
Ethan called his CFO.
