Chapter 9 - THE LULLABY VICTORIA RECORDED.
The recorder played the lullaby Maya sang in the NICU, followed by Victoria instructing a therapist to use it whenever the twins cried for their mother.
She had deliberately preserved the children’s attachment to Maya so they could later be used to identify and discredit her.
Ethan stared at his mother.
“You turned their memory into evidence you planned to control.”
Victoria insisted everything protected the family from scandal and Grace’s instability.
Grace replied, “You created the instability, then cited it as proof.”
Federal agents charged Victoria, Daniel and participating doctors with fraud, unlawful confinement and record manipulation. Daniel’s cooperation did not erase years of payments. Grace, Maya and Ethan each faced review for choices that prolonged the harm.
The hospital canceled coerced custody agreements and returned homes and funds taken from vulnerable families.
Then technicians recovered the final minute of the recorder.
A man’s voice asked Victoria, “What happens when Ethan learns the twins are not biologically his?”
Ethan looked at Grace.
