The hidden clause named eighty-six housekeepers, cooks, drivers and maintenance workers as joint beneficiaries.
Most had never been told.
Diane laughed.
“You expect servants to operate a technology company?”
Head housekeeper Rosa Alvarez stepped from the staff line.
“We operated your homes, raised your children and covered your mistakes. We can learn a boardroom.”
Ryan insisted the workers had surrendered their rights through payroll agreements.
Rosa produced pay stubs showing mandatory “innovation deductions” taken from minimum-wage employees.
Claire stared at the totals.
“They financed the patent that made you rich.”
Mrs. Whitmore suspended Ryan and called an emergency board meeting.
Judge Price tried to invalidate the worker clause by declaring Daniel mentally incompetent before his death.
The affidavit came from a clinic owned by Diane’s brother.
Claire asked whether Daniel had seemed confused.
Rosa answered, “He was frightened. Rich families rename fear when poor people describe what they saw.”
