Chapter 6 - THE MATRIARCH WHO KNEW HER FIRST.

Mrs. Whitmore admitted she had known Claire since birth.

Daniel once repaired equipment at the family estate, and Claire’s mother worked in the laundry room.

When Claire became ill as a child, Mrs. Whitmore secretly paid for treatment.

Diane seized on the confession.

“You see? She has always depended on us.”

Mrs. Whitmore turned on her.

“Helping a sick child did not give us ownership of her future.”

Claire asked why the relationship had been hidden.

Mrs. Whitmore explained that her late husband threatened to fire Daniel and Claire’s mother if anyone revealed that a Whitmore had assisted “staff families” personally.

The family considered compassion toward workers a weakness.

Ryan had later discovered the old medical file and used it to locate Daniel’s patents.

Claire’s marriage had been planned around that discovery.

Mrs. Whitmore surrendered her voting shares to an independent worker trust.

Then Claire opened Daniel’s final photograph.

On the back, he had written:

“Eleanor Whitmore knows why your mother disappeared.”

Claire looked at the matriarch.

“My mother did not die in an accident?”

Mrs. Whitmore answered, “No. She was paid to leave you.”
