Chapter 5 - THE LIE LILA USED TO SAVE RUTH.
Lila did not deny the recording.
She had pretended to cooperate after Vincent threatened to deport two immigrant workers and cancel medical coverage for Ruth’s grandson.
“I told him what he wanted to hear so I could keep Ruth alive until the gala.”
Vincent sneered.
“That is convenient.”
Lila replied, “Convenient is what wealthy men call survival when poor women have no safe choice.”
Noah asked why she had not trusted him.
“Because your family taught you to doubt anyone who entered through the service door.”
She surrendered her phone and accepted investigation instead of demanding belief.
The messages proved she had warned Ruth and hidden the deed before entering the ballroom.
They also showed Noah had received the same warning two days earlier.
His account marked it as read.
Noah remembered nothing.
Eleanor admitted she had his phone cloned by the family office and messages opened before he saw them.
Then investigators found the device used to copy his account.
