THE WOMAN BENEATH THE MARBLE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - THE GUARD WHO LOWERED HIS EYES.

Adrian knelt beside the open cellar while Elena clung to the wooden ledge below.

“Tell me why my daughter found you beneath my house—and why you called her by her mother’s name.”

“I was not hiding from you. I was hiding from the person who put me here.”

Elena raised an old silver locket identical to Sophie’s.

“Your wife left this with me. She said Sophie would recognize it.”

Adrian’s anger faltered.

“My wife has been dead for three years.”

“She is not dead.”

Then Elena looked past him toward the three security men.

“Before you pull me out, ask which one locked the door.”

One guard lowered his eyes. Adrian recognized Thomas Reed, the man who had protected Sophie since birth.

Thomas finally spoke.

“I locked it, sir—but not to keep Elena inside. I locked it because someone was coming to finish what they started.”

Footsteps sounded from the upper staircase.

Adrian whispered, “Mother.”
