Chapter 4 - THE WIFE HIDDEN IN RICHMOND.
Federal agents located Claire Ashford in a private Richmond clinic under another name. She was alive, conscious and able to speak, but a court order had barred contact with Adrian and Sophie.
Margaret insisted Claire had entered treatment voluntarily.
Claire faced her through a secure video call.
“You told me Sophie would be taken if I refused.”
Adrian stared at the admission form. His electronic signature appeared beneath the guardianship request.
He remembered signing hospital insurance papers after Claire’s supposed accident.
“You hid this inside a stack of documents.”
Claire’s pain was controlled.
“You had lawyers, assistants and time. I had one locked room.”
Adrian did not ask forgiveness. He requested an independent investigation of every document he had approved.
Then Claire recognized Elena.
“You were supposed to bring the ledger to federal court.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“I took money and disappeared instead.”
The room went silent.
Elena admitted Margaret paid her two hundred thousand dollars.
