Adrian’s father, Charles Ashford, was found in a sealed guest wing under private medical supervision. He had helped create the worker trust, then allowed Margaret and the board to erase it when investors threatened to withdraw.
“I told myself keeping the hotels open would protect everyone,” he said.
Rosa answered, “You protected the company and selected workers to absorb the cost.”
Charles, Margaret, Judge Ashford, Malcolm and cooperating executives faced prosecution and civil review. Thomas, Claire, Elena and Adrian testified about their own choices without demanding redemption.
The mansion became worker-owned cooperative housing, a legal clinic and a public archive. Pensions were restored, false competency orders voided and every displaced family offered return or restitution.
The two silver lockets and cellar key were displayed beneath glass.
A plaque read:
“THEY HID HER BELOW THE MARBLE BECAUSE THE TRUTH CAME FROM THE PEOPLE THEY KEPT BENEATH THEM.”
During the opening, Sophie noticed a draft behind the display.
