Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE BROKEN TABLE
The crystal chandelier above the Blackwood dining hall shimmered like nothing was about to collapse, yet in the next second, everything did.
The glass table shattered beneath Emily’s weight before Ethan could even reach her.
She fell barefoot into a field of harmless crystal fragments, her white satin robe torn slightly at the shoulder, both hands instinctively shielding her abdomen. She was breathing, conscious—but visibly humiliated in front of a room full of America’s elite.
Victoria stood above her in a burgundy designer gown, trembling, tears already staged in her eyes. The diamond ring on her finger—Ethan’s ring—caught the light as she raised it like evidence.
“She attacked me,” Victoria cried out, voice breaking perfectly for the audience.
Around the room, wealthy guests reacted not with concern, but judgment.
A woman in pearls leaned toward her husband and whispered, “Girls like that always want a shortcut into money.”
Another guest signaled security, as if Emily were an unwanted stain on the marble floor.
Ethan finally reached her. He dropped to his knees, scanning her face, checking her breathing, ignoring the whispers that tried to define her worth.
“That’s not what happened,” Emily said, voice shaking but clear.
Victoria immediately turned toward Ethan, her tone shifting from victim to authority.
“You’re really going to believe her over me? Over your future wife?”
The room went silent. That sentence was not just emotional—it was strategic. It was class warfare wrapped in silk.
Ethan slowly stood. His eyes moved from Victoria… to Emily… then upward.
A small black dome camera blinked above the chandelier.
He pulled out his phone.
“We don’t have to decide based on appearances,” he said quietly.
Emily suddenly grabbed his wrist. Her voice dropped to a whisper only he could hear.
“Play the part… before she pushed me.”
