Chapter 1 - The Lie Waiting at the Door

James Carter returned to his upscale Virginia home one day earlier than anyone expected.

He stepped through the open front door wearing his dark-navy aviation service uniform and found his eight-months-pregnant wife lying barefoot on the hardwood floor.

A clear plastic cup rested beside her, water spread beneath her teal maternity dress, and one hand remained pressed protectively over her belly.

Karen Whitmore, Emily’s older cousin, stood bent over her with a section of Emily’s hair still trapped between her fingers.

“Get your hands off my wife!” James shouted.

His travel bag struck the floor as he crossed the foyer.

He held Karen by the upper arms, moved her away from Emily and released her without striking or shoving her.

“What did you do to her?”

Karen raised both hands and claimed Emily had slipped on the spilled water.

She said she had grabbed Emily’s hair only to stop her head from hitting the floor.

Emily looked up at James, breathing unevenly.

“She pushed me,” she said.

“Then she grabbed my hair. Please call an ambulance.”

Karen immediately called her a liar.

She reminded James that Emily had been anxious throughout the pregnancy and suggested that fear had distorted her memory.

James reached for his phone and began an emergency call.

Then he turned toward Karen.

“Do not move. The police are coming.”

Karen’s confidence disappeared for only a second.

She then pointed toward the black smartphone lying beside the water and said Emily had been secretly recording private family conversations.

According to Karen, Emily had attacked her first after being caught planning to destroy the Whitmore family business.

James looked toward his wife’s phone.

Its screen was cracked, but a red recording symbol still glowed.

Before he could retrieve it, the device played Emily’s voice from several minutes earlier.

“Karen, please stop. The baby has nothing to do with the inheritance.”
