Chapter 3 - The Signature Worth More Than Her Bruises
James confronted Karen with the documents while Diane’s attorney attempted to take the case from him.
Karen claimed the papers were draft agreements prepared to protect the company while James was deployed.
She said Emily had discovered them, misunderstood their purpose and became violent.
Diane supported every word.
She reminded James that Karen had graduated from an elite business school and had helped manage Whitmore Aviation since she was twenty-three.
Emily, by contrast, had no corporate experience.
The family spoke as though education purchased with inherited wealth made Karen incapable of deception and Emily’s public-school salary made her naturally greedy.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Emily and the baby were stable, but recommended observation.
Diane told relatives the examination proved Emily had exaggerated the incident.
Within an hour, family group chats described Karen as the victim of an unstable pregnant woman.
No one mentioned the hair pulled from Emily’s scalp or the water deliberately poured beside her feet.
James inspected the transfer documents and found his electronic signature, private identification code and a security stamp used only inside Whitmore Aviation headquarters.
Someone with senior access had prepared them.
He contacted the company’s compliance director, who said James personally authorized the transfer two weeks earlier during a secure video meeting.
James had been overseas that day without access to the company network.
The director sent him a still image from the meeting.
It showed a man wearing James’s uniform, sitting in James’s home office.
The face was partially hidden by poor video quality, but Karen stood clearly behind him.
James asked who had initiated the call.
The account belonged to Emily.
Diane smiled as though the mystery had already been solved.
She said Emily must have arranged the impersonation to create a false trail.
Then James noticed something in the background of the image.
On the office shelf stood a framed photograph that had been removed six months earlier.
Only one person still possessed a copy of that old photograph.
James’s father, retired aviation executive William Carter.
William had publicly supported the marriage.
Privately, he had offered Emily money to leave before the pregnancy.
