Chapter 5 - Poor Families Cannot Afford a Scandal
Diane arrived at the hospital carrying a court petition requesting temporary guardianship over Emily’s medical and financial decisions.
Her attorney claimed Emily posed a danger to herself and the unborn child.
The petition cited the foyer incident, the alleged threatening messages and testimony from Karen describing weeks of unstable behavior.
James demanded to know how a court hearing had been scheduled so quickly.
The attorney said powerful families knew how to respond efficiently during emergencies.
Emily understood what that meant.
Ordinary families waited months for hearings.
The Whitmores could turn an accusation into a signed order before dinner.
Diane offered Emily a private agreement.
If she withdrew her statement against Karen, transferred the child’s future shares and agreed to leave Virginia after giving birth, the family would stop the investigation against her parents’ bakery.
They would also pay her enough money to live comfortably.
Emily asked whether Diane truly believed a mother would sell her child.
Diane answered that women from poor families sold things every day when the price was high enough.
James heard the insult and finally ordered Diane out.
The attorney reminded him that opposing the petition could expose his family’s internal conflict to his service command.
James replied that silence had already cost his wife too much.
Emily’s parents arrived wearing bakery uniforms because inspectors had forced them to close during the afternoon rush.
They apologized to Emily for creating another problem.
The apology broke her heart.
They had done nothing wrong, yet working-class people were trained to apologize whenever wealthy people harmed them.
Emily’s father revealed that William had offered him two hundred thousand dollars before the wedding to persuade Emily to leave James.
He refused.
Since then, their bakery had faced unexplained inspections, loan delays and zoning complaints.
James realized the campaign against Emily had lasted for years.
A hospital social worker reviewed the guardianship petition and found that the required psychological evaluation had been completed by Dr. Eleanor Price.
Emily had never met Dr. Price.
The doctor was Diane’s college roommate and served on the Whitmore Foundation board.
Before the court could act, the black smartphone recovered from the foyer automatically uploaded its full recording to cloud storage.
The audio did not begin with Karen pushing Emily.
