Chapter 4 - The Father Who Chose the Company

William did not deny knowing about the forged transfer.
He said the family had been protecting James from a costly divorce and an emotional wife.
According to him, Emily had never belonged in the Carter-Whitmore business world.
She asked too many questions about labor contracts, employee insurance and safety complaints.
Her concern for ordinary workers embarrassed senior investors who preferred charity speeches to actual accountability.
William admitted arranging the false video meeting with assistance from Karen.
He claimed the documents did not steal the baby’s inheritance.
They merely placed the shares into a temporary trust managed by “responsible adults.”
James asked why Karen had been chosen instead of the child’s parents.
William answered that Emily’s family had no experience preserving generational wealth.
The statement exposed the truth beneath years of polite insults.
The Whitmores did not fear that Emily would misuse the fortune.
They feared that she might use it differently.
Emily had proposed increasing wages for factory employees and creating independent safety oversight after a technician was injured at one of their facilities.
Karen called those ideas expensive.
William called them dangerous.
Diane called them proof that Emily hated successful people.
James informed his father that the police had been called and the documents would be investigated.
William laughed.
He said the county prosecutor attended Whitmore charity events and the family attorney had already prepared statements portraying Emily as unstable.
Then he revealed that James’s service career could also be threatened.
The forged corporate meeting had used a device registered to James’s official travel account.
If reported publicly, investigators might accuse him of mishandling restricted credentials.
James finally understood the trap.
His family had tied Emily’s reputation, his career and their unborn child’s future into one story they controlled.
At the hospital, Emily received an anonymous message showing her parents’ bakery surrounded by health inspectors.
The message read:
WITHDRAW YOUR ACCUSATION OR THEY LOSE EVERYTHING.
James returned to the hospital and found Emily crying silently.
She showed him the threat, but refused to surrender.
Then her doctor entered with unexpected news.
Someone had changed Emily’s hospital file to state that James was not permitted to see her or make medical decisions.

The authorization had been signed by Emily herself.
She had never seen it.
