Chapter 7 - The Brother Who Feared the Victim

Ethan told investigators that Emily had been secretly collecting company documents and threatening to expose the entire family unless James received control of Whitmore Aviation.

His accusation revived doubts that the recording had nearly erased.

News outlets described Emily as either a courageous whistleblower or an ambitious outsider who had infiltrated an old family.

Reporters photographed her parents’ small bakery and compared it with the Whitmore estate as though the difference in property value helped determine truth.

Ethan produced emails appearing to show Emily demanding money.

She denied writing them.

Digital investigators traced the messages to a laptop inside her own house.

The device had been used while Emily and James were sleeping upstairs.

Only family members with keys could enter without triggering the alarm.

Ethan admitted visiting frequently, but said he had never used the computer.

Emily asked why he needed protection from her.

He revealed that someone had sent him photographs of Emily standing outside his motel room, accompanied by threats against his wife.

Emily had been hospitalized when the photographs were taken.

The woman in the images wore her teal maternity dress and appeared visibly pregnant.

Karen claimed this proved Emily had an accomplice impersonating her.

James examined the photographs and noticed the woman wore shoes.

Emily had been barefoot during the foyer confrontation because pregnancy swelling made footwear painful.

The impersonator was also wearing a prosthetic pregnancy garment.

Investigators recovered surveillance footage from a nearby store.

Diane’s personal assistant had purchased the garment using cash.

The assistant admitted Diane ordered her to pose as Emily, send threatening messages and frighten Ethan into giving false testimony.

Ethan broke down.

He confessed that William had forged James’s authorization by switching the final pages of the insurance packet.

He remained silent because his family trust would be canceled if he refused.

Emily asked whether money mattered more than the safety of her unborn child.

Ethan said he had spent his entire life watching William reward James for discipline and Karen for ambition while treating him as weak.

He thought obedience was his only path to belonging.

His confession exposed another form of favoritism inside the family.

William had turned his children against one another by making love conditional on usefulness.

Then Ethan revealed the most disturbing detail.

The plan to remove Emily had not begun with the inheritance.

William believed Emily’s baby was not James’s child.

A private DNA report had supposedly proven it.
