Chapter 1 - You’re Not Leaving“You’re not leaving.”

Daniel’s voice cut across the dining room.

Every wine glass went still.

Emily sat at the end of the long white table with Lily across her lap. The six-year-old’s cheeks were burning red, her pajamas damp with sweat, her tired head pressed against Emily’s chest.

“She needs help now,” Emily said.

Daniel leaned closer, one open hand raised as if correcting an employee.

“My mother’s dinner has barely started.”

Emily stared at him through tears.

“Her temperature is over one hundred and four.”

A relative sighed.

Another looked toward Eleanor Hale, Daniel’s billionaire mother, seated beneath the brass chandelier in burgundy silk and pearls.

Eleanor did not ask about Lily.

She looked at Emily’s jeans and beige slippers.

“You could have dressed before making a scene.”

Humiliation burned hotter than the small red mark on Emily’s cheek.

She had grown up over a laundromat in Queens. Daniel had grown up with private physicians who came through side entrances.

To his family, fear sounded reasonable only when rich people felt it.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The concierge nurse can come later.”

“Later could be dangerous.”

“You always assume the worst because you weren’t raised around proper care.”

Emily’s face changed.

Not worry.

Class.

That was what he meant.

At the exact center of the room, Daniel’s teenage niece Ava held her phone vertically.

Recording.

Daniel noticed and straightened.

“Put that away.”

Ava did not.

Emily shifted Lily carefully into her arms and stood.

Daniel followed her one step.

“If you walk out during my mother’s anniversary dinner, don’t expect to come back.”

Emily placed herself between him and the child.

Then said quietly:

“I’m not choosing between your family and mine.”

A pause.

“I already chose.”

May you like

She walked toward the foyer.

And Ava kept filming.
