Chapter 2 - Just a FeverEleanor followed them into the foyer.

Her heels struck the hardwood with slow, controlled authority.

“Emily, stop.”

Emily reached for the dark front door.

Lily whimpered against her shoulder.

Eleanor’s expression remained cold.

“Children get fevers.”

“Not like this.”

“You are frightening her.”

Emily looked down at Lily her.”

Emily looked down’s closed eyes.

“No.”

“She’s too weak to be frightened.”

Daniel stood behind his mother.

For one second, he looked uncertain.

Then Eleanor glanced toward the relatives still watching from the dining room.

Public image won.

It always did.

She said:

“Women from your background often mistake panic for devotion.”

Emily stopped.

The insult was polished enough that no one at the table would call it cruel.

That was how rich families survived their own behavior.

Daniel added:

“My mother raised three children.”

“With nurses,” Emily replied.

Silence.

Eleanor’s face hardened.

Emily continued:

“And staff.”

“And drivers.”

“And doctors who arrived when you called.”

She adjusted Lily’s weight.

“My daughter has me.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re embarrassing everyone.”

Emily opened the door.

“No.”

“I’m showing them.”

The cold suburban air touched Lily’s flushed face.

Emily carried her toward the gray SUV.

Ava remained in the doorway, still recording.

Eleanor whispered to Daniel:

“Let her go.”

Emily heard it.

Then Eleanor added something quieter.

“If she leaves against your instructions, the record becomes useful.”

Emily paused beside the car.

Daniel’s face changed.

Ava’s phone remained pointed at them.

And suddenly Emily understood.

They were not merely allowing her to leave.

They had been waiting for her to disobey.
