Chapter 6 - The Poor Wife ClauseDaniel arrived at the hospital just after midnight.

Emily met him outside Lily’s room.

He looked exhausted.

No tuxedo.

No family confidence.

Only fear.

“Is she okay?”

“She will be.”

His eyes filled with relief.

Then Emily held up Ava’s video.

The relief disappeared.

“You knew they were filing against me.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

“Did you know Lily owned fifty-one percent?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

Emily laughed once.

Quietly.

Painfully.

“You hid it.”

“My grandfather created the trust.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Daniel explained that his grandfather had distrusted the Hale board.

He placed the controlling interest in Lily’s name, believing the youngest generation might be harder to corrupt.

Until Lily turned twenty-five, the parent with primary decision-making authority would supervise the shares.

Emily stared.

“Your mother needed me removed.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped her.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I thought the shares belonged with people who understood the company.”

There it was.

The real prejudice.

Emily had managed a grocery store before marriage.

Worked double shifts.

Handled payroll.

Raised Lily.

But Daniel still believed boardrooms required a different class of person.

“People like you,” Emily said.

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

“Thank you.”

He looked confused.

“For finally saying it honestly.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was wrong.”

“You were comfortable believing I was inferior.”

“No.”

“You let your mother turn my fear for Lily into evidence.”

He could not deny it.

Emily handed him the hospital report.

The physician had documented that Lily required prompt treatment.

Daniel read the final line.

Delay in evaluation may have increased medical risk.

His face collapsed.

Emily said:

“You didn’t protect your family tonight.”

She looked through the glass at Lily sleeping safely.

“You protected control.”

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Eleanor.

He answered.

Her first words were loud enough for Emily to hear:

“Did the hospital document her hysteria?”

May you like

Daniel closed his eyes.

And ended the call.
