Chapter 5 - The Custody TrapAva’s recording continued.

Eleanor’s voice was calm.
“She will leave.”
Daniel looked uncertain.
“What if Lily’s fever is real?”
Eleanor replied:
“It probably is.”
Emily felt sick.
They knew.
They had known Lily was ill.
The attorney said:
“Do not physically stop Emily. State clearly that she does not have permission. Let the witness record her leaving anyway.”
Ava had been positioned at the center of the room.
Not as family.
As evidence.
Daniel asked:
“What happens after we file?”
The attorney answered:
“Temporary decision-making authority transfers to you. Trust supervision transfers to Eleanor.”
Emily paused the video.
Trust.
This was not only about Lily.
She called Ava.
The teenager answered crying.
“I didn’t know what they were doing.”
Emily kept her voice gentle.
“What did they tell you?”
“That you were trying to take Lily away from the family.”
“Why did you keep filming?”
Ava hesitated.
“Because Grandma told me to start only after Uncle Daniel said you couldn’t leave.”
Emily understood.
They wanted a selected clip.
Daniel giving an instruction.
Emily defying him.
No context.
No fever discussion.
No trust folder.
No attorney.
But Ava had pressed record early.
“Why?”
The teenager whispered:
“Grandma always says poor people lie when money is involved.”
Silence.
“So I thought rich people probably do too.”
For the first time that night, Emily almost smiled.
Then Ava sent a photograph of the cream folder.
Across the top:
LILY HALE FAMILY TRUST — CONTROLLING INTEREST: 51%.
Emily stared.
Her six-year-old daughter did not merely have an education account.

Lily owned controlling shares in the Hale family company.
And if Emily were declared unfit, Eleanor would control them.
