Chapter 9 - She Came BackEmily returned to the mansion three days later.

Not to reconcile.
Not to apologize.
Not to ask permission.
She carried Lily through the same dark front door.
The child’s fever was gone.
Her braids were loose.
Her cheeks had returned to their normal color.
Every relative from the dinner had been asked to attend.
Eleanor stood beside the long dining table.
Daniel remained near the foyer.
No one sat.
Emily placed the hospital discharge file beside the wineglass Daniel had used that night.
Then she placed separation papers beside it.
His face changed.
“Emily.”
She looked at him.
“You told me not to expect to come back.”
His eyes filled.
“I was angry.”
“No.”
She spoke calmly.
“You believed the house was yours.”
Silence.
“You believed the company was yours.”
“You believed Lily’s future was yours.”
“And you believed I stayed because women like me don’t leave houses like this.”
Daniel looked down.
He had no defense.
Emily continued:
“I came back for Lily’s things.”
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“You cannot remove family property.”
Emily looked at her.
“My daughter is not family property.”
Silence.
The relatives stared at the table.
No one supported Eleanor now.
Class loyalty disappeared quickly when recordings existed.
Daniel whispered:
“Can we fix this?”
Emily looked at the small red mark still visible on her cheek.
Then at the room where everyone had watched her cry.
“You can fix yourself.”
A pause.
“You cannot use me as proof that you did.”
She turned toward the staircase.
Then Ava called from the foyer.
“Emily.”
She was holding her phone again.

Her face was pale.
“There’s another video.”
