Chapter 4 - The Hospital ClockLily’s temperature was 104.6 when Emily reached the hospital.

The nurse moved quickly.
Fluids.
Medication.
Tests.
Lily remained conscious, exhausted and frightened, her small hand locked around Emily’s finger.
The attending physician said the infection was treatable.
But waiting longer could have made the situation far more serious.
Emily closed her eyes.
She had been right to leave.
Yet relief did not erase what had happened.
At 11:18 p.m., Daniel called.
She did not answer.
At 11:21, he texted:
Bring Lily home when she is discharged. We will handle this privately.
At 11:24:
My mother believes your behavior tonight proves you are emotionally unstable.
Emily stared at the words.
There it was again.
Emotional.
Unstable.
The labels wealthy families used when a poorer woman resisted instructions.
Then a third message arrived.
Not from Daniel.
From Ava.
I’m sorry. They told me to film you.
Emily’s chest tightened.
A second message followed.
They said you would panic and make yourself look unfit.
Then Ava sent a video.
The recording began twenty-three minutes before Daniel said, “You’re not leaving.”
Emily pressed play.
Eleanor sat at the dining table with a cream folder open in front of her.
Daniel stood beside her.
A family attorney spoke through a phone on speaker.
“The trust requires evidence that Emily acts against Daniel’s parental direction.”
Daniel asked:
“And if she takes Lily out tonight?”
The attorney answered:
“Then we file before morning.”
Emily stopped breathing.

This had never been a family dinner.
It was a custody trap.
