Margaret insisted that whatever happened to Hannah had no connection to Claire’s claim over the mansion.
Ethan opened the black briefcase he had dropped at the entrance. Inside lay the original mortgage deed.
During the 2008 financial crisis, Margaret’s family had nearly lost the estate. Claire’s late mother, Rosa Bennett, used compensation from an unpaid-wage lawsuit to purchase the defaulted mortgage. She allowed the Mercers to remain under a thirty-year lease.
Margaret had spent years calling Rosa “the help.”
Claire looked around at the marble Rosa’s money had saved.
“You mocked my mother while living beneath the roof she paid to preserve.”
The lease had expired that morning. Ownership now passed to Claire.
Margaret claimed Rosa’s purchase had been charity.
Mr. Hale, the estate attorney, answered, “Money from a working woman is not charity merely because a wealthy family receives it.”
Then he opened an attachment to the deed.
