Rosa’s treatment had been covered by an employee medical fund. Margaret’s clinic denied the claim, forcing Claire to accept settlement money that already belonged to the workers.
“You manufactured the emergency, then bought my silence with stolen wages,” Claire said.
Margaret replied that no one had forced Claire to sign.
Mr. Hale answered, “Choice becomes exploitation when one side controls the illness, the paycheck and the eviction notice.”
The clinic’s billing director surrendered records showing similar settlements offered to staff members who questioned missing pensions.
Claire accepted review for her silence but refused to let shame isolate her from the other victims.
The worker council voted to manage the recovered funds collectively.
Then the housekeeper revealed that Ethan had asked her to record Margaret for weeks. He suspected fraud before leaving on his business trip.
Claire faced him.
“You knew she was dangerous, yet you left me here?”
Ethan answered honestly.
“I believed evidence would protect you.”
