Chapter 7 - THE PAYMENT CLAIRE NEVER DISCLOSED.
Claire demanded to know why her pregnancy mattered to Richard.
The deed contained a succession clause: if Claire had a living child, Margaret’s lease interests ended permanently. Without an heir, Richard could challenge Rosa’s purchase as an abandoned family transaction.
Margaret had not humiliated Claire merely out of hatred. She wanted evidence of emotional instability and hoped the stress would support the guardianship petition.
Investigators froze Richard’s accounts and preserved the mansion cameras.
Then the estate auditor found a payment of ninety thousand dollars made to Claire two years earlier.
Margaret smiled.
“Tell them how your principles survived when you needed money.”
Claire admitted accepting a confidential settlement after discovering missing staff pensions while working as the family bookkeeper. The money paid for Rosa’s cancer treatment.
“I bought my mother six months,” she said. “The workers lost two years of evidence.”
The retired gardener looked wounded.
Claire placed the settlement under restitution review.
