Chapter 3 - THE VOICE OF THE WOMAN THEY ERASED.
Vanessa claimed Elena’s mother, Rosa Morales, had willingly sold the worker shares for medical care.
Elena shook her head.
“My mother died owing the hospital. What care did your money buy?”
The ledger showed Rosa had signed with a trembling hand after being declared mentally unstable by a private Harrington clinic.
The same clinic had treated workers who challenged missing wages.
An elderly housekeeper named Margaret stepped from the guest line.
“Rosa was not unstable. She was terrified.”
Vanessa called Margaret bitter and ungrateful.
Margaret answered, “Gratitude is not surrender, and poverty is not proof that we deserved less.”
Julian ordered the gala doors closed and called federal investigators.
Then Noah found a recording cylinder inside the piano compartment.
Rosa’s voice filled the ballroom.
“If Elena ever hears this, tell her Julian’s father promised to protect us.”
A man interrupted the recording.
“Rosa, sign now, or Elena goes into foster care.”
