Chapter 10 - THE GROOM WHO KNEW THERE WOULD BE AN ESCAPE.
Cameron admitted Julian convinced him to prepare an emergency passport in case Isabella’s family challenged the resort.
He had believed the Cruz family might sue, expose the company, and ruin the wedding.
He never asked why escape required forged documents.
Once again, he had accepted the version that protected his comfort.
Isabella did not scream.
Her disappointment was heavier than anger.
“You did not plan the locked room. But you prepared to run from the truth before marrying me.”
Cameron surrendered his company shares and agreed to testify against Julian, Diane, and the executives who forged the land transfer.
Robert resigned as chairman after admitting he approved negotiations built on deception.
Diane was charged with conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and unlawful restraint.
Claire entered a cooperation agreement but lost her business license.
Sofia became an independent compliance officer elected by estate workers, not appointed by the Whitmores.
The Cruz road remained family property.
The resort project was replaced with a worker-owned vineyard cooperative, affordable housing, and a public history center naming the laborers removed from Whitmore records.
At Diane’s hearing, she told Isabella:
“You will never be one of us.”
Isabella placed the forged easement on the evidence table.
“That is the first thing you have said tonight that sounds like a blessing.”
The judge denied bail.
The wedding was not celebrated, annulled, or repaired overnight.
Isabella left the estate with her parents and told Cameron that repentance was not the same as reconciliation.
Weeks later, Sofia recovered one final file from the bathroom phone.
It showed a second bride in the same suite five years earlier.
She wore Isabella’s veil.
