Chapter 4 - THE BRIDE WHO RAN BEFORE THE TOAST.
Emma opened Caroline’s envelope while the guests watched.
Inside was a handwritten apology and a copy of the original Hale Family Trust.
Caroline admitted Richard had ordered her to remain silent. If she exposed him before the wedding, their father would cancel her inheritance and ruin her fiancé’s struggling construction company.
She had chosen the ceremony over Lily.
“I told myself silence was not the same as helping him,” Caroline wrote. “Then I watched a child become afraid of her own father.”
Richard called the letter emotional nonsense.
“She always panics when family pressure becomes real.”
Emma placed the trust beside the spilled wine.
It showed that Lily’s money had not come from Richard’s family.
Emma’s late father, Thomas Reed, had supervised the hotel’s construction and accepted ownership shares when the Hales could not pay his crew.
Those shares passed to Lily.
Richard had spent years telling Emma her father was only a laborer lucky to be employed.
In reality, the ballroom stood partly on his unpaid wages.
Then Marcus examined the final trust page.
If Richard intimidated Lily, his voting rights transferred immediately to the child’s independent protector.
