Chapter 5 - THE WORKERS WHO PAID FOR THE WEDDING.
Hotel employees closed the ballroom doors before Richard could order anyone out.
The head server placed payroll files beside the wedding cake.
For six years, the Hale family had withheld banquet service fees and used them to pay for renovations, political donations, and Caroline’s wedding reception.
Richard dismissed the records.
“Staff members receive salaries. Service charges belong to the business.”
A server named Rosa looked directly at him.
“Guests were told that money went to us. My husband delayed surgery while your sister chose imported roses.”
Richard warned that exposing the accounts could bankrupt the hotel and cost everyone their jobs.
Emma’s answer cut through the room.
“You steal their wages, then hide behind their paychecks when consequences arrive.”
The backup camera showed Marcus deleting employee complaints under Richard’s instructions. In exchange, Marcus received a management title and a condominium owned by the family trust.
Marcus whispered that Richard had threatened to fire his entire department.
Rosa did not excuse him.
“We were threatened too. You survived by helping them choose who suffered.”
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Caroline returned without her veil.
