Chapter 8 - THE GROOM PAID TO ENTER THE FAMILY.
Nathan admitted Arthur financed his company, selected the engagement ring, and arranged his first meeting with Caroline.
His assignment was to gain her trust and locate Thomas Reed’s notebook before the wedding activated her protector status.
Caroline’s face collapsed.
“You studied my life before pretending to love me.”
Nathan answered, “Your family offered me a future.”
Emma looked at him.
“They offered you a seat, so you helped pull the chair away from everyone poorer than you.”
Nathan had grown up in staff housing after his father lost a Hale pension. Instead of exposing the family, he accepted their money and became useful to them.
He surrendered the notebook when police threatened to search his company.
Thomas had documented every stolen wage, forged deed, and employee forced from housing after questioning ownership.
The final entry revealed that Arthur had not merely underpaid the construction crew.
He had arranged the accident that killed Thomas before he could testify.
Arthur called the accusation impossible.
Thomas died in another state.
Then Rosa played a toll-road recording preserved with the notebook.
Arthur’s voice ordered Nathan’s father to follow Thomas’s truck.
Nathan went pale.
“My father told me that job paid for our house.”
