Daniel’s retired military credentials had been attached to the defense grant without his consent.
The university presented him as a security consultant, allowing the basement project to bypass review.
Vale smiled thinly.
“You attended our veterans’ fundraiser and signed partnership forms.”
Daniel remembered signing a guest release and donor acknowledgment.
“You hid operational authority behind ceremonial paperwork.”
A federal auditor confirmed his signature had been copied onto safety approvals.
Daniel requested investigation of his own role rather than claiming ignorance erased it.
Michael admitted he had provided Daniel’s old service records to Helen years earlier, believing they would help Lily receive scholarship preference.
“You traded my identity for access,” Daniel said.
“I thought I was helping her.”
“Help without consent is control wearing a kinder face.”
Then investigators recovered Lily’s missing folder from Vale’s private safe.
Inside was a list of students injured, expelled or institutionalized after challenging the basement project.
The final name belonged to Rosa’s son, Mateo Alvarez.
