THE CAPSULES IN HIS CUP / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Mug Rebecca Couldn’t Explain

Ethan sat crying beside the navy bed, one hand pressed against his stomach while David supported his shoulders.

“Look at me, son. What happened?”

Ethan handed him the dark-blue phone.

“I drank from that mug, then I felt sick.”

The video showed Rebecca placing the hot chocolate on his nightstand before leaving.

Rebecca clutched the white mug against her champagne robe.

“It was only hot chocolate. He probably ate too much candy.”

Melanie took the mug from her.

“Do not blame a frightened child before anyone checks the evidence.”

She stirred once.

Two orange capsules rose through the chocolate and settled on the silver spoon.

Rebecca stepped backward.

“I can explain.”

David moved between her and Ethan.

“Then start explaining before the ambulance arrives. No one leaves this room.”

Rebecca’s face tightened.

“You cannot interrogate me like hired staff. I am part of this family.”

Melanie answered coldly.

“Capsules do not care whether your last name owns the house.”

David called emergency services while Ethan remained awake and protected.

Then he replayed the phone footage frame by frame.

In the mirror behind Rebecca, another woman was visible handing her the mug.

David recognized the pearl bracelet immediately.

It belonged to his mother, Evelyn Whitmore.

Before he could call her, Rebecca whispered, “Your mother said the boy had to look sick before noon.”

On the nightstand lay an emergency custody petition.

It had been signed at nine that morning.
